Vector-borne diseases are illnesses spread through the bite of an infected tick or mosquito. The two most common in our region are Lyme disease and West Nile virus. If you are travelling within Canada or abroad, be aware of potential risks for other vector-borne diseases.
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by mosquito bites. Most people bitten by an infected mosquito do not show any symptoms. Others may experience headache, body aches, fever, nausea, vomiting, or rash. Fewer than 1% of those infected develop serious or life-threatening symptoms.
Lyme disease is caused by bacteria transmitted through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (also called a deer tick). Early symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a skin rash. If untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. It’s important to check for ticks after outdoor activities and to know how to remove them safely.
Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a disease caused by the bacteria Rickettsia rickettsii carried in some dog ticks.
